The particular cleft is the valley and brook between Emerson and Grymes Hills. This valley was deepened by the glacier 20,000 years ago. The brook which ran through the valley originated in Clove Swamp and ran to the Kill Van Kull. The damming of this brook over the years created the different lakes and ponds in the area.

Considerada uma joia da arquitetura setecentista, a Igreja Imperial Irmandade da Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro é um dos maiores patrimônios da arquitetura colonial religiosa brasileira. Construída no centro do adro, é formada por dois octógonos irregulares, alongados e interligados, antecedidos pela base quadrada da torre sineira, cujo pé lhe serve de pórtico. Os trabalhos ornamentais em talha estão no altar-mor, altares da nave, tribunas e coro, e representam a transição entre o final do estilo rococó e o neoclássico. Sua autoria é atribuída ao Mestre Valentim de Almeida, expoente da azulejaria joanina , e formam um dos conjuntos mais importantes do Brasil. A devoção a Nossa Senhora da Glória surgiu no início do século XVII, alguns anos após a fundação da cidade, quando no ano de 1608, um certo Ayres colocou uma pequena imagem da Virgem numa gruta natural existente no morro.

A Catedral de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, ou como é mais conhecida Catedra Metropolitana, teve sua pedra fundamental abençoada e lançada por Dom Jaime de Barros Câmara, a 20 de janeiro de 1964. Em 1972, o Cardeal D. Eugenio de Araujo Sales, já pôde celebrar a Missa de Natal na nova Igreja. Aos 2 dias do mês de julho de 1980, Sua Santidade o Papa João Paulo II, em sua primeira visita ao Brasil, presidiu solene cerimônia com os bispos do CELAM, que comemorava Jubileu de Prata. E, no dia 4 de outubro de 1997, Sua Santidade presidiu solene Missa celebrada por mais de 500 bispos do mundo inteiro. A Catedra. tem 75 metros de altura externa e 64 metros de latura interna, 106 metros de diâmetro externo e 96 metros interno, com capacidade para abrigar 20.00 pessoas em pé ou 5.000 sentadas. A exemplo de todas as igrejas católicas, também a Catedral do Rio de Janeiro tem como símbo máximo a Cruz.

A imponente e conceituada Sala Cecília Meireles, uma edificação do século XIX, está localizada na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, no Largo da Lapa. Tradicional casa de concertos de música de câmara no cenário cultural da cidade, assim denominada em homenagem à poetisa, pianista Cecília Meireles. O prédio, originalmente erguido para funcionar como hotel (Grande Hotel da Lapa) recebeu empresários e políticos da República Velha. Posteriormente, em 1948 foi reformado e transformado em sala de cinema (Cine Colonial). O Teatro Municipal João Caetano foi reinaugurado em 1995, após uma profunda restauração. O projeto de recuperação encarou um grande desafio que era respeitar os aspectos históricos e ao mesmo tempo dotá-lo de modernidade. Ao longo de sua história, o teatro sofreu sucessivas obras de reformas que foram alterando a forma original do prédio, adaptando espaços e desfigurando seus seus núcleos históricos, dando origem a um prédio com características de diferentes épocas. Nessa época, o mar batia próximo de sua fachada posterior onde havia um atracador para pequenas embarcações que traziam os produtos frescos.

The National September 11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honor to the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.
The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America. The pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker created the Memorial design selected from a global design competition that included more than 5,200 entries from 63 nations.
The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history.

O Trem do Corcovado é uma linha férrea localizada na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. A linha começa em Cosme Velho e segue até o cume do Corcovado, a uma altitude de 710m. O cume é famoso pela estátua do Cristo Redentor e pela vistá aérea de várias praias do Rio de Janeiro.
A linha possui 3,8km de extensão e utiliza um sistema de tração elétrico. A linha foi inaugurada pelo imperador Dom Pedro II em 9 de Outubro de 1884. Inicialmente utilizava tração mecânica, sendo que o sistema de tração elétrico foi instalado em 1910, se tornando pioneiro no Brasil. Em 1980 a linha foi modernizada com a compra de trens da empresa SLM, sediada na cidade de Winterthur, Suíça.
A linha férrea do Corcovado é uma das poucas que ainda utilizam um sistema elétrico trifásico, possuindo, assim, dois cabos aéreos. A linha possui 4 trens, cada qual com dois vagões. O trajeto é completado em cerca de 20 minutos, sendo que um trem parte a cada meia hora, o que dá ao sistema uma capacidade de transporte de 360 passageiros por hora. A importância da edificação, sede do CCL, para a memória do Rio levou o governo federal a decretar o tombamento de sua fachada, em 1985. Guardião de um rico acervo histórico sobre a empresa, a cidade e o estado, o CCL já teve no apoio às artes um de seus principais focos. Atualmente dedica-se a um projeto educacional denominado Centro Cultural Light para Estudantes, onde as crianças podem aprofundar seus conhecimentos sobre a história da eletricidade e da Light. Esse projeto, iniciado em junho de 2002, já beneficiou cerca de 150 mil estudantes e professores.

O Sítio do famoso paisagista abriga cerca de 3500 espécimes de plantas originárias de florestas brasileiras e de outros países, numa área de 360.000 metros quadrados. A coleção é considerada uma das mais importantes do mundo no que se refere a plantas tropicais e semi-tropicais, possuindo o título de patrimônio cultural brasileiro desde 1985. Cursos e encontros são regularmente promovidos e estudantes universitários são orientados por professores de Biologia/Botânica. Fazem parte do Conselho Consultivo do Sítio muitos dos melhores botânicos e paisagistas brasileiros que ajudam a instituição com os seus conhecimentos. O Sítio não é aberto ao público para passeios livres. É obrigatória a prévia marcação da visita que se realiza orientada por monitores.
