Lorraine Massey, was born in Leichester, England, and started cutting hair in a local salon at age 13. "I went to the salon every day after school, and as often as I could on weekends. At 16, she went to study with Martin Smith, the artistic director of Remi-Toni & Guy, and at 19, took her scissors and went traveling - to Hong Kong, Japan, and the Philippines - where she lived in a hut and cut hair on the beach.

Under John Allan's directorship, the Jean Louis David International Salons expanded into Beverly Hills, Chicago and Toronto.
