Classic Sofa was founded over 17 years ago by Maurice Stone and his sons with the goal of providing upholstered furniture of old world quality and style at an approachable price. In August 1893, John Willis, Jr. opened his first furniture store on Church Street, opposite St. Paul's church in downtown Norfolk. In 1901, he moved to the comer of Main and Church Streets in Norfolk in the Purcell Building that had been a hotel at one time. In 1912, he was the first occupant of the Mastin Building, later to become Smith and Welton Department Store.

In 1953, two sisters from Cincinnati, Ohio came to New York City seeking adventure. Annie and Martha came up with the idea of making furniture out of various "parts". With flush doors and different sized legs they built dining tables, coffee tables, beds, sofas, room dividers, shelving, benches, and more.
These new creations were put on display in their first store, located in a brownstone on 51st Street and 3rd Avenue, which they named "Furniture in Parts". Annie and Martha lived just above their store and put all their energies into their new business.
Their hard work paid off when an editor from 'Look' magazine took notice of their novel approach to furniture and design. He wrote an article, accompanied with photos, all about their unique concept. It was in this 'Look' magazine article that their store "Furniture in Parts" was appropriately nick-named "Door Store". The article drew so much attention that several more newspaper and magazine stories followed. 98 years of Rubin's Furniture! That's a very long time. Almost a century ago, my grandfather, Ben Rubin came to Madison, Wisconsin from Russia and opened the very first Rubin's Furniture. Ben's two sons, Isadore Rubin and David Rubin were the 2nd generation of Rubins. In 1932 Isadore and David opened Badger Furniture, a modest store in downtown Madison. During my childhood I often helped my father, Isadore to shovel coal into the furnace on cold winter Sunday mornings. In high-school I worked part-time on the delivery truck and I helped unpack new furniture in the warehouse. During my college years, I graduated to the "floor" and began my sales career.
