A história da empresa começa em 1956 com a fundação da Zahar Editores, pioneira na publicação de livros de ciências humanas e sociais no Brasil e responsável pela formação de várias gerações de universitários e intelectuais brasileiros.
A partir de 1985, deu início a uma nova editora: Jorge Zahar Editor. Em 2007, passados 22 anos e com 1.200 títulos em catálogo, conclui um ciclo de renovação que ampliou o leque de publicações com obras de interesse geral. Para comemorar o evento, a editora desenvolveu uma nova logomarca, buscando um desenho que remetesse às raízes da editora e refletisse a mudança que a projeta para o futuro. |

Incorporada à vida cultural da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, a Livraria Argumento surgiu na década de setenta, no número 199 da Rua Dias Ferreira, atualmente, número 417. Inicialmente, oferecia ao seu público, livros dos autores 'proibidos' pela repressão da ditadura militar. Autores como Miguel Arraes, Celso Furtado, Paulo Freire, Dias Gomes, Érico Veríssimo, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Chico Buarque e Barbosa Lima Sobrinho, entre outros - que assinavam artigos no jornal semanal alternativo Opinião e na revista Argumento. Ambas as publicações tiveram a circulação suspensa por imposição da censura e encerraram suas atividades na década de 70.
Foi com o espírito de oposição ao governo que a revista mensal emprestou seu nome e conceito à livraria, que recebeu exilados e importantes pensadores da questão nacional. The club is an ongoing monthly meeting to discuss how novelists and short story writers (and occasionally filmmakers) have employed the post-apocalyptic tale. Pageant Book Shop was founded in 1946 by Sidney B. Solomon and Henry "Chip" Chafetz as a used and rare book shop in New York City. Pageant had its home in several locations along Fourth Avenue, known as “Book Row of America”, for 35 years before moving around the corner to East 9th Street. During that time, Mr. Solomon and Mr. Chafetz branched out into several additional areas which included selling prints and maps, reprinting scholarly and important works such as Henry Roth’s “Call It Sleep” and publishing the award winning Pageant Facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible.
