Fundada em 1947, a Riachuelo iniciou suas atividades com a venda de tecidos a preços baixos.
Em 1979, foi comprada pelo Grupo Guararapes, que iniciou o processo de reestruturação e mudança estratégica que resultou na venda de roupas prontas, em vez de apenas tecidos.
A partir de 1993, o foco da Riachuelo passou a ser a moda. Sintonizada com as tendências nacionais e internacionais, a empresa vende moda preservando bons preços e melhorando constantemente a qualidade de seus produtos.
Esta estratégia envolveu a criação e o fortalecimento de marcas próprias da Riachuelo, cada uma com identidade visual e público alvo específico.
Em 2004, além de reformas e melhorias no Visual Merchandising de suas lojas, a empresa mudou a estratégia de Marketing. Saiu da mídia convencional e investiu no processo de verticalização, apostando em produtos com preços menores e qualidade superior.
Em 2007 a Riachuelo voltou a investir nas mídias de massa, com uma nova campanha de comunicação, cujo objetivo é comunicar moda a preços acessíveis.
A EMPRESA HOJE - A Riachuelo faz parte do Grupo Guararapes, que é hoje, o maior grupo de confecção de roupas da América Latina e tem a Riachuelo como principal canal de distribuição dos seus produtos. O Grupo tem um total de 33 mil funcionários distribuídos entre suas lojas, matriz, fábricas – Natal, RN e Fortaleza, CE - dois centros de distribuição e um Shopping Center – o Midway Mall, em Natal, RN.
A Riachuelo está entre as três maiores redes de lojas de departamento do Brasil e conta com 104 lojas distribuídas em 21 estados brasileiros, além do Distrito Federal.
A empresa, que inaugurou três novas lojas no primeiro semestre deste ano, prevê a abertura de outras seis unidades ainda este ano. Possui centros de distribuições em Natal no Rio Grande do Norte e em Guarulhos, São Paulo.

O ano de 1965 marca o início da história de Lojas Renner como uma empresa verdadeiramente independente. Até então, Lojas Renner existia como parte do grupo A. J. Renner, indústria fabril instalada no bairro Navegantes, em Porto Alegre (RS). Foi como parte integrante do grupo A. J. Renner que Lojas Renner inaugurou em 1922, na capital gaúcha, seu primeiro ponto-de-venda para a comercialização de artigos têxteis. Em junho de 2005, ocasião em que a Companhia já atuava com 64 pontos-de-venda, a JC Penney, em conjunto com os administradores da Lojas Renner, optou pela venda do controle da Companhia através de oferta pública de ações na Bolsa de Valores de São Paulo.
