No dia 31 de maio, no Salão Nobre do Palácio do Catete, personalidades e instituições foram homenageadas com a condecoração Cruz do Mérito Empreendedor Juscelino Kubitschek pelo Centro de Integração Cultural e Empresarial de São Paulo, inclusive o Museu da República, junto a Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Fernanda Montenegro, Silvio Santos e outros.

Em 30 de janeiro de 1903 o então Presidente do Estado, Borges de Medeiros, assinou o decreto de criação do primeiro museu no Rio Grande do Sul: o Museu do Estado - desse modo, era encaminhado um novo destino à guarda do acervo que, desde 1901, vinha sendo acumulado nos pavilhões da 1ª Exposição Agropecuária e Industrial gaúcha, no antigo Campo da Redenção. Neste mesmo ano, Julio de Castilhos, durante uma cirurgia mal sucedida para a retirada de um tumor na garganta, veio a falecer. Dois anos mais tarde, a residência dele foi adquirida pelo governo do Estado e tornou-se a sede do Museu do Estado que, a partir de 1907, passou a se chamar Museu Julio de Castilhos. Ao longo de um século de existência, o Museu Julio de Castilhos vem promovendo a expressão das identidades culturais do povo rio-grandense, democratizando o acesso ao conhecimento e possibilitando a reflexão crítica em relação às questões relacionadas à história do Rio Grande do Sul e do Brasil.

Construída por volta de 1860, pelo médico José Martins Rocha, a casa é vendida ao Industrial Português José Francisco Correia - Visconde de Sande e depois Conde de Agrolongo (Títulos recebidos em Portugal).
Em 1903, o Conde retira-se para Portugal e põe a residência a leilão com todos os seus pertences, não aparecendo comprador. Pela mesma época a Capital era transferida de Petrópolis para Niterói e o Governador Nilo Peçanha resolveu adquirir o palacete para sede do governo, consumando-se a venda em 1904. Durante os 71 anos seguintes, teve o Palácio, 43 ocupantes entre governadores interinos e interventores federais.

Projetado pelo arquiteto Oscar Niemeyer, o Museu, construído no Mirante da Boa Viagem, local privilegiado que se debruça sobre as águas da Baía de Guanabara e leva o olhar do visitante até o outro lado, onde estão o Corcovado e o Pão de Açúcar. Niemeyer afirmava que ao visitar o local "imaginou o museu como qualquer coisa solta na paisagem, um pássaro branco a se lançar sobre o céu e o mar de Niterói"; o que quer dizer um supremo respeito à paisagem. The DOCKYARD MUSEUM in the Naval Officer's House interprets the story of English Harbour and of the people that toiled in this famous Georgian Royal Naval Yard. It also explains the 20th century return of sailing ships and the aims and aspirations of Nelson's Dockyard National Park. There is also a small "Nelson's Room" with a life sized portrait of Nelson researched through archaeological means.
