It was virtually unknown in the west until the 1960s, when Yip Man - the legendary teacher of Bruce Lee - revealed it to the public. Grandmaster Yip Man - who has been deemed one of the most influential Martial Artists of the 20th century by Inside Kung Fu magazine - had other renowned students, including his eldest son Yip Chun. This is the heritage of Sifu Yip Pui (Terence), Yip Chun's most senior student teaching in the United States. The Japan Karate Association of Brooklyn, founded in 1972, offers training in traditional Shotokan Karate-Do. The school is affiliated with the Japan Karate Association (JKA), a world-wide organization dedicated to encourage and assist students in their growth and understanding of Shotokan, and to promote the development of the art generally. It is also a member of Shotokan Karate-do International (SKDI). SKDI operates out of New York City and serves as the headquarters for many JKA clubs worldwide. Classes are taught by Sensei Shu Takahashi, 7th dan. Sensei Takahashi is a JKA-licensed tournament judge, examiner and instructor. Additionally, he currently teaches karate at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook, and has taught at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) from 1983 to 1997. Sensei Takahashi has studied under Sensei Mori, 8th dan, since 1963.
