Spence School

Founded in 1883 and located in the heart of Manhattan's Upper East Side, Allen-Stevenson is an urban elementary day school for boys from kindergarten through ninth grade. Through quality teaching and careful attention to each boy, our educational program balances strong academics, athletics, and the arts. In saying that our boys become "scholars and gentlemen," we challenge them as students and nurture them as people.

From kindergarten through senior year, roughly 670 students flow through these halls, each bringing their own perspectives and stories from across the greater New York area. The primary building stretches twelve stories along East 83rd Street with views toward the East River, creating an urban campus atmosphere that feels particularly intimate during winter months when the river takes on a quieter character. Just a few blocks north on East 87th Street, the Field House opens up space for a full slate of athletic pursuits—basketball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, squash, track, field hockey, and lacrosse all find homes here, with the facility providing a welcome refuge for winter sports and indoor training when the season turns cold.

The School for Children is an independent demonstration school for Bank Street College and a working model of the College's approach to learning and teaching. Education at the School is experience-based, interdisciplinary, and collaborative. The emphasis is on educating the whole child -- the entire emotional, social, physical, and intellectual being -- while at the same time, the child's integrity as learner, teacher, and classmate is valued and reinforced. The School is divided into Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools in order to accommodate the differing developmental stages and curriculum needs of children.

N-6<br> Initially opening in 1971 as a one-room schoolhouse in the heart of Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, The Studio School has evolved as an independent, not-for-profit day school whose continuing challenge is to educate the minds and bodies of our students while allowing them to maintain their own spirit and character. Today we serve children ages two through fourteen and, while we are no longer a one-room schoolhouse, we still adhere to the principles upon which Studio was founded.
