March - The mission of the annual Kona Chocolate Festival is to entertain both visitors to and residents of the Big Island; showcase the creative talents of fine Big Island chefs, chocolatiers, ice cream and candy makers; provide a means to highlight cacao farming and support the chocolate industry in Hawai'i; and raise funds to support the unique education each child receives at Kona Pacific Waldorf School in Kealakekua.

For only second time in history the United States Golf Association will stage its national championship on a public golf course when the 2008 U.S. Open is conducted at Torrey Pines' South Course outside San Diego, Calif. What started as a response to bare roadsides in the early 1960s has blossomed into Dixon's defining pride. When Dutch Elm disease stripped the highways of their leafy canopy decades ago, the local Men's Garden Club rolled up their sleeves and planted 4,000 petunias along South Galena Avenue—a bold move that transformed the landscape. Year after year, the project grew, spreading across miles of roadways until pink blooms became woven into the fabric of this Illinois community. These days, thousands of petunias paint the town in shades of rose and magenta from spring through the crisp days of autumn, earning Dixon the official title of Illinois's Petunia City. The flowers brighten more than two miles of highway entrances and main streets, creating pockets of warmth that feel especially welcoming as winter approaches and the blooms fade. The effort spans generations—nearly everyone in Dixon's 15,000-person community has contributed something to keeping this living legacy thriving. On Oct. 4, 1895, the first U.S. Open Championship was conducted by the United States Golf Association on the nine-hole course of Newport (R.I.) Golf and Country Club. The dream of an international tennis tournament in Miami began in the 1960s, when top tennis players such as Jack Kramer, Frank Sedgman, Pancho Gonzalez, Pancho Segura and Butch Buchholz toured the country in a station wagon, playing tennis in darkened arenas and fairgrounds. It was before the days of Open tennis, and they traveled with a portable canvas court and plenty of hopes. Buchholz - an original member of the “Handsome Eight” (the first recognized pros of Lamar Hunt’s World Championship Tennis Circuit introduced in 1968) - competed until he was forced to retire from tennis in 1970 with chronic tennis elbow.
