The first American Male was opened in 1997 by the Raylon Corporation, a full service wholesale distributor of beauty supply products in PA, NJ and DE. The salon's purpose was to serve as a learning lab to try and better understand and service male clients in a salon specifically for men. With virtually no marketing, the salon began to grow and other American Male salons were opened in the surrounding areas.
