Lucky Number ‘13’ Arrives for Times Square New Year’s Eve The giant, seven-foot-tall “13” (and all the superstitions that go along with the number) will arrive in Times Square on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 from 11 AM – 11:30 AM at the Times Square Museum & Visitor Center (7th Avenue between 46th and 47th Streets).
The famous (or infamous) numeral will be very carefully unloaded and brought inside where the “13” will be presented with thirteen multi-cultural good luck charms to turnaround its unlucky reputation. After receiving the good luck charms, the “13” will be illuminated to symbolize good fortune and a bright future in the New Year. The lucky “13” and its thirteen lucky charms will remain on display until December 26th. At that time, the numeral will be installed atop One Times Square to complete the “2-0-1-3” sign that lights up at midnight to announce the beginning of the New Year at the completion of the Ball Drop.

On Oct. 4, 1895, the first U.S. Open Championship was conducted by the United States Golf Association on the nine-hole course of Newport (R.I.) Golf and Country Club. The first U.S. Open was considered something of a sideshow to the first U.S. Amateur, which was played on the same course and during the same week. Both championships had been scheduled for September but were postponed because of a conflict with a more established Newport sports spectacle, the America’s Cup yacht races.

Late August thru Labor Day. Giant pigs, carnival rides, giant foods, general weirdness, art, headlining music acts perform every night in the Grandstand. About 1.6 million expected attendance. Held annually, twelve days ending Labor Day. State Fairgrounds.

February. One of the world's great celebrations, marking the last day before Lent begins. The fun actually begins in early January and climaxes on "Fat Tuesday", so-called because people often eat their fill the day before Lent.

Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular, 2006
This year, Macy's 4th of July fireworks show will include six barges in three locations: the traditional area between East 23rd and East 42nd Streets, just south of South Street Seaport, and between Liberty and Ellis Islands. The show starts at approximately 9:00 pm.

The FAIF Film Festival is an annual event of the non-profit FAIF (Foundation for the Advancement of Independent Films) dedicated to promoting and supporting the art of the motion picture through the presentation of an annual, multi-day festival in which independent films submitted by filmmakers throughout the world are publicly exhibited at the Mann Chinese 6 Theaters, in Hollywood, California. Septermber/October. Just a couple hours drive from the glorious Rocky Mountains, Edmonton is known for its big sky and endless sunshine. Located east of Vancouver and west of Toronto, Edmonton is in the heart of the Canadian Prairies and our city is often called upon to be the set for independent and Hollywood movies. With a population of one million people, Edmonton is a city that loves movies. It's reported that the number one, per capita, movie rental city in Canada is Edmonton. Need we say more? Oh yes, and we have the world's largest shopping mall -- West Edmonton Mall.

February. Winter carnival.

July-August. Caribbean-style carnival with parties, music and parade.

September/October - This year we introduce a new event program at the VIFF. As part of our hospitality and networking initiatives, the festival is hosting a regular series of receptions at our spacious new Vancouver International Film Centre.
