Bluestockings is a radical bookstore, fair trade cafe, and activist center in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We've recently expanded both our space and our hours. We can now fit more books and more comfortably host events.
We carry over 4000 titles on topics such as queer and gender studies, global capitalism, feminism, police and prisons, democracy studies, and black liberation. You can also find some good 'ole smutty fiction. We also carry magazines, zines, journals, alternative menstrual products and other oddly hard-to-find good things. We host readings, workshops, performances, discussions and films almost every night. Please see our events calendar for details on upcoming events, and when visiting the store, take a look at our community bulletin board to learn about other events happening around the city. Oh, and we run a cafe which is full of organic, vegan, fair trade goodness! |

An online/mail-order bookdealer located in Downtown Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. We have been dealing in books since 1995 and living happily in Fort Greene since 1972.
Downtown Brooklyn is a fascinating place with a wealth of historical and cultural interest. It was the focal point of the Battle of Brooklyn (or, as some have it, the Battle of Long Island) and the departure point of Washington's famous retreat that saved American forces. The landmark Martyrs' Monument., which honors the more than 10,000 victims of British prison ships during the War for Independence sits in Fort Greene Park at the end of our street. At the other end of our street each November the runners in the New York City Marathon will pass along Lafayette Avenue. A bit further down Lafayette Avenue is BAM, the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Fort Greene is and has long been home to numerous artists and musicians. |

The bookstore opened in 1976, before the museum itself. It was designed by Jay Bright, who emulated the white oak finish of the Louis Kahn interior of the museum. The two comfortable chairs, visible from the street, and the custom designed fixtures were a significant counterpoint to the generic mall stores of the era. In 1980, we relocated an adjacent cheese store and expanded.
