Goodness knows the world had its share of problems in 1951. The Korean War was raging in the Far East, while race riots flared in the Midwest. America was testing old atomic bombs in Las Vegas, and detonating new hydrogen ones in the Marshall Islands. Gen. Douglas MacArthur was fired for being a relentless hawk, the week after Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death for allegedly hawking atomic secrets. Actor Ronald Reagan co-starred with a chimp in Bedtime for Bonzo, and red-baiting Sen. Joe McCarthy co-starred with a similar crew, in the infamous House Un-American Activities Commitee.

A imponente e conceituada Sala Cecília Meireles, uma edificação do século XIX, está localizada na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, no Largo da Lapa. Tradicional casa de concertos de música de câmara no cenário cultural da cidade, assim denominada em homenagem à poetisa, pianista Cecília Meireles. O prédio, originalmente erguido para funcionar como hotel (Grande Hotel da Lapa) recebeu empresários e políticos da República Velha. Posteriormente, em 1948 foi reformado e transformado em sala de cinema (Cine Colonial). Desde o início da década de 70, vem recebendo atenções especiais das autoridades do estado do Rio de Janeiro com o apoio de instituições privadas objetivando manter um espaço cultural permanente para difusão de música erudita, em particular a música de câmara. A Confeitaria Cavé ou, simplesmente, Cavé, data de 1860. É a mais antiga confeitaria do Rio de Janeiro. Foi fundada por Charles Auguste Cavé, francês que ficou a frente do negócio até 1922. Entrar nela é voltar ao passado, reviver um pouco do Rio Antigo. A arquitetura marcante da Cavé possui influências de diversos países. Lustres, vitrais e vidros em geral eram franceses; as cadeiras e mesas foram projetadas por Cólon, um espanhol que residia no Brasil.

Com a mudança da Capital Federal para Brasília, em 1960 a cidade do Rio de Janeiro passou à qualidade de Estado da Guanabara e o Palácio Tiradentes passou a ser a sede da Assembléia Legislativa do Estado da Guanabara. Anteriormente entre 1926 a 1960, serviu à Câmara Federal. A Guanabara existiria entre 1960 e 1975, quando se fundiu ao Estado do Rio de Janeiro e o Palácio Tiradentes passou a abrigar a Assembléia Legislativa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. O painel decorativo do plenário do Palácio Tiradentes foi executado por Eliseu Visconti em 1926 e representa a assinatura da primeira Constituição Republicana de 1891. No grande painel, restaurado em 2001, figuram em tamanho natural os retratos dos sessenta e três constituintes

Localizado no Flamengo, o Arte Sesc se estabeleceu em uma construção de 1912, com arquitetura eclética, antiga moradia de Frederico Figner, empresário que trouxe para o Brasil os primeiros equipamentos de som e luz, como fonógrafos, gramofones e kinetoscópios. Figner também fundou a primeira gravadora musical no Brasil, a Odeon, contribuindo para difundir a música brasileira na Europa.
O Arte Sesc abriga em suas cinco salas mostras de artes plásticas e está aberto ao público com uma programação que prestigia eventos já reconhecidos, além dos de cunho experimental, incentivando o surgimento de novos valores artísticos, circulação de novas idéias e tendências

A Academia Brasileira de Letras é uma instituição que foi fundada em 20 de julho de 1897.
Composta por 40 membros efetivos e perpétuos, eleitos em votação secreta e 20 sócios correspondentes estrangeiros, tem por fim o cultivo da língua e a literatura nacional. O Palácio Austregésilo de Athayde, situado na Avenida Presidente Wilson ao lado do Petit Trianon, foi inaugurado em 20 de julho de 1979, na presidência do Acadêmico Austregésilo de Athayde. O objetivo do então presidente era de construir um prédio moderno que no futuro se tornasse base sólida do patrimônio da Academia, além de fazê-lo instrumento de promoção da cultura sobre toda a nação brasileira.
Atualmente, parte do Palácio Austregésilo de Athayde é espaço para atividades culturais da ABL e local onde se situa a Diretoria e a Biblioteca Rodolfo Garcia.

O Parque Guinle é um parque público localizado numa área arborizada de cerca de 30 mil metros quadrados no entorno do Palácio Laranjeiras, residência do governador do Rio de Janeiro. O Parque foi no originalmente construído como jardins do palacete da família Guinle erguido na década de 20. A partir de 1940, o Parque Guinle passou a pertencer ao Governo Federal e foi objeto de um projeto de urbanização com a construção de um conjunto de edifícios residenciais projetados pelo arquiteto Lucio Costa, concebidos conforme os princípios propostos pelo arquiteto francês Le Corbusier, que serviram de ensaio para o padrão residencial das superquadras da capital do país, Brasília.

O Boulevard Olímpico é o maior live site da história dos Jogos Olímpicos. Localizado na Zona Portuária e no Parque de Madureira, se transformou na principal área de lazer dos cariocas e turistas fora dos locais de competição. No trecho da orla marítima entre a Gamboa e a Praça XV, que foi revitalizado pelo projeto Porto Maravilha, o público pode assistir às principais provas dos Jogos Olímpicas e Paraolímpicos em telões de alta definição, localizados em palcos com programação diária de shows, além de apresentações de artistas de rua e outras intervenções culturais. A principal atração no local, na Candelária, é a exposição da pira olímpica, que pela primeira vez nos Jogos teve a chama acesa e m área pública.

Um dos mais bonitos prédios do Rio de Janeiro, localizado na Praça Floriano, conhecida como Cinelândia, no centro da cidade, o Theatro Municipal é a principal casa de espetáculos do Brasil e uma das mais importantes da América do Sul. No Boulevard Olímpico do Parque Madureira é um live site dos Jogos Olímpicos, onde a população pode curtir os Jogos Rio 2016 com muitos shows, atividades esportivas e culturais, além de acompanhar a transmissão oficial dos jogos por meio de um telão, instalado em cima do palco.

Fundado em 1932, o Jockey Club Brasileiro teve como primeiro presidente Linneo de Paula Machado, que foi o responsável pela construção do Hipódromo da Gávea, a maior obra da cidade na época. Lá é realizado anualmente o Grande Prêmio Brasil, a prova de maior expressão do turfe nacional, também famosa pela elegância dos trajes dos visitantes da festa. O Jockey Club também possui uma sede social no Centro do Rio de Janeiro, localizada num prédio de 12 andares, projeto assinado pelo arquiteto Lúcio Costa. As dependências são amplas e espaçosas, contando com 363 salas para escritórios, sete lojas, um auditório servido por elevadores especiais, 13 andares de estacionamento para 800 carros. No 11º e 12º andares, os jardins são de Burle Marx e os interiores do arquiteto Jorge Hue. Atividades: piscina, hidroginástica, saunas, massagiata, estética, quadra poliesportiva, ginástica.
