In 1899, the first Mikimoto pearl shop opened in the fashionable Ginza district of Tokyo. The Mikimoto business quickly expanded internationally, opening stores in London (1913), then in Paris, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Shanghai and Bombay, and was thus one of the first Japanese brands to attain an international presence and recognition.
Mikimoto took advantage of every opportunity to personally promote his pearls, and took part in the 1926 Philadelphia World Exposition in which he displayed a replica of the "Liberty Bell" covered with pearls. Source |

The company resulted from a simple request for a pair of fish cufflinks - bizarre but true. A local restaurant owner commissioned the manufacture of a pair of sterling silver cufflinks, as a gift for their loyal restaurant clients.
Harvey Nichols, the exclusive London fashion store, loved the design and ordered a whole collection. Links of London was born and today we have grown internationally with stores in the UK, Hong Kong, USA and Canada. |

During the 1960s and 1970s the firm popularized fashion trends such as the beatnik look, tweed suits, tight pants and tall, thigh-high boots, including the creation of arguably the most famous classic tuxedo suit for women in 1966, Le Smoking suit. He is the first to popularize ready-to-wear in an attempt to democratize fashion. He is also the first designer to use black models in his runway shows. Among his muses were Loulou de La Falaise, the daughter of a French marquis and an Anglo-Irish fashion model, Betty Catroux, the half-Brazilian daughter of an American diplomat. Source

Michael has always designed collections using classic materials that he is inherently drawn to: silver, gold, diamonds, an endless variety of semi-precious stones, as well as more unusual natural materials found in travels around the world. Early in his career, he discovered the ancient technique of granulation, in which metal is heated and formed into tiny spheres which are affixed in various patterns. Incorporating this design element alongside clean crisp lines into much of his work provides a signature that is uniquely his own. Using this wide mix of materials and an extensive vocabulary of design elements allows him to present collections that combine his modern, functional sensibility with an infinite respect for the hues, textures, and compositions abundant in nature.

Since the early days, LALIQUE's recurring themes included the female form, flora and fauna. The female was both the object and the subject of René Lalique's masterpieces. Fauna and flora consist of flowers, fruit, trees, insects, birds, fish, and reptiles: no single plant or animal is despised. The Zales® story began in 1924 in Wichita Falls, Texas, where Morris (M.B.) Zale, William Zale, and Ben Lipshy applied their vision of providing customers with quality merchandise at the lowest possible price to the opening of the first Zales® Jewelers. Their idea to offer a higher priced product to everyone was implemented through a revolutionary credit plan of "a penny down and a dollar a week." Although this marketing strategy proved to be successful, it was also the friendly customer service and dedicated employees that led to the jeweler's expansion, reaching 12 stores in Oklahoma and Texas by 1941.
