In August 1893, John Willis, Jr. opened his first furniture store on Church Street, opposite St. Paul's church in downtown Norfolk. In 1901, he moved to the comer of Main and Church Streets in Norfolk in the Purcell Building that had been a hotel at one time. In 1912, he was the first occupant of the Mastin Building, later to become Smith and Welton Department Store.

When Beth Colosimo was growing up in Salt Lake City, Utah, there was always a room or two in her parents’ home where she and her friends were not allowed to go. Bought an expensive piece of furniture here and paid about 25% in cash and then financed the rest through them. All they gave me about the financing was the brochure with the terms that didn't even identify who the lender would be until you get out the magnifying glass and read the fine print. Not only that but the brochure didn't even list a web site address or phone number where you could contact the lender.
