College Square is owned and managed by CBL & Associates. It features approximately 70 stores and restaurants including Carmike College Square Cinemas 9. A new movie theater is under construction at the mall, on part of the southern parking lot. The old cinema will be converted into "specialty stores."
Opened in 1988, College Square is the only shopping mall in an eight-county area of East Tennessee. Burlington Square opened as Holly Hill Mall in 1969, in reference to the nearby neighborhood where it was located. At the time, the mall's anchor stores included JCPenney, Belk, Sears, and Woolworth, which eventually became Goody's.
