The principal goal is to take people on road bike rides in the Southern Adirondack Region. Home base is in Lake George and with rides of varying length, difficulty and duration in Warren, Washington, Saratoga, Essex and Hamilton Counties. Due to airspace restrictions and congested cities in the tri-state area, Middletown is a perfect blend of beauty and convenience. We are only an hour from New York City and much closer to Rockland, Westchester, Yonkers, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster and Sullivan Counties. Denise and Gabriel Werneck, a mother-and-son team, both born and raised in Rio, started Rio Hiking in 1999. They started by taking visitors on the family’s favourite hike, the Tijuca Peak, as well as visiting the historic district of Santa Teresa, where they had lived most of their lives.
