Looking to provide a service to golf by hosting a tournament, Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts decided to hold an annual event beginning in 1934. The final decision was made at a meeting in New York at the office of member W. Alton Jones. Roberts proposed the event be called the Masters Tournament, but Bobby Jones objected thinking it too presumptuous. The name Augusta National Invitation Tournament was adopted and the title was used for five years until 1939 when Jones relented and the name was officially changed. An early decision was whether Jones would play or serve as an official. Jones preferred not to compete but was persuaded by the Club's members to join the field. In the 12 Tournaments that Jones played, his best finish was 13th in 1934.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (also "Macy's Day Parade" in informal contexts, and originally the "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade" ) is an annual parade presented by Macy's Department Store. The three-hour event is held in New York City starting at 9:00 a.m. EST on Thanksgiving Day.
Large animal-shaped balloons replaced the live animals in 1927 when the Felix the Cat balloon debuted. Felix was filled with air, but by the next year, helium was used to fill the expanding cast of balloons.
The Parade was suspended from 1942-1944 because of World War II. The rubber and helium were needed for the war effort. The Parade resumed in 1945 using the route that it still runs today. Lumberjack Days is Stillwater's annual summer celebration. Most of the festivities are held in Lowell Park adjacent to the beautiful St. Croix River in historic downtown Stillwater. There is no admission fee. National-act concerts and lumberjack shows along with one of the largest musically choreographed fireworks shows in the United States are just a sample of the FREE entertainment waiting for you at Lumberjack Days 06.

Many of the exciting Fleet Week activities that have become synonymous with the event are staged at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, while others are scheduled throughout the five boroughs of New York. In partnership with New York City, the United States Navy and the Intrepid Museum, over a dozen Navy and Coast Guard ships as well as ships from all over the world visit New York Harbor each Fleet Week. The visiting Fleet Week vessels are open for free public tours daily. There are also military demonstrations, athletic competitions and many other exciting activities over the course of the seven-day celebration. One highlight of the week’s activities is the Memorial Day ceremony held on the flight deck of the Intrepid. Veterans and active military personnel from all five branches of the armed services join in the museum’s tribute to the men and women who have made the supreme sacrifice for their country. The ceremony includes the playing of Taps, a ceremonial wreath laying, 21-gun salute, the unfurling of a 100 foot American flag and a fly-over of military aircraft in the missing man formation. Some other Fleet Week event favorites include the Parade of Ships, stem-to-stern relay race and tug-of-war crew competitions, live demonstrations of military skills, and the Best Chow Competition. October - With its close proximity to UCLA, Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, Holmby Hills and Brentwood, The Majestic Crest theatre is the perfect location to showcase and launch independent product. Westwood remains the capital of the single-screen palace theatre and no theatre in the area represents the spirit of independent cinema like the Majestic Crest. Please join us in bridging the gap between independent film and independent cinema in the beautiful community of Westwood.

Mid-July. The weeklong festival features hundreds of tap dancers who perform and give workshops.

Septermber/October. Just a couple hours drive from the glorious Rocky Mountains, Edmonton is known for its big sky and endless sunshine. Located east of Vancouver and west of Toronto, Edmonton is in the heart of the Canadian Prairies and our city is often called upon to be the set for independent and Hollywood movies. With a population of one million people, Edmonton is a city that loves movies. It's reported that the number one, per capita, movie rental city in Canada is Edmonton. Need we say more? Oh yes, and we have the world's largest shopping mall -- West Edmonton Mall.

September/October - This year we introduce a new event program at the VIFF. As part of our hospitality and networking initiatives, the festival is hosting a regular series of receptions at our spacious new Vancouver International Film Centre.

July-August. Caribbean-style carnival with parties, music and parade.

The Calgary International Film Festival Society was established in 1999 as a non-profit organization providing an annual world-class cinema event for the citizens of Calgary and area. We aim to showcase the best of national and international film to Calgary audiences. The Festival has brought numerous Canadian film premieres and world caliber filmmakers to our city. Your support is needed to continue bringing quality films to Calgary.

The Vancouver International Comedy Festival Society is a non-profit society dedicated to the development of local comedic arts. The society strives to bring awareness, support and funds to BC comedic performers and provides emerging local comics with the audiences needed to develop their skills. The not-for-profit society is entering its 20th year and within the last three has been developing a clearer mandate and activities to become a stronger community voice for comedic arts and local talent.
